Machete Types Explained: Which Blade Shape Does What

Latin, bolo, kukri, panga, billhook, cane. Six shapes, six different jobs.

The shape tells you the job

Every machete pattern is a solved problem from somewhere in the world. The shape is not decoration; it is where the weight sits, and where the weight sits decides whether the blade slices green stems or chops woody stems.

Weight forward chops. Weight even slices. Hooks pull. That is the whole taxonomy, and everything below is a variation on it.

Latin (or bush) — the general answer

A long, near-straight blade of even width, eighteen to twenty-four inches, weight distributed along its length. It slices grass, vines, light brush and cane with a fast wrist stroke and is the cheapest and most widely available pattern in the world.

Buy this one first if you do not know what you need. It does eighty percent of everything acceptably.

Bolo and panga — the choppers

Both bulge toward the tip, moving mass forward. The bolo swells into a rounded belly; the panga rises into a broad, angled point. That forward weight turns a slicing tool into a chopping one, and both will take down woody saplings and thick stems that a Latin blade merely bruises.

The panga's upswept point is also the better tool for splitting and for reaching into a tangle without a full swing.

Kukri — the one that does the most work per swing

The forward-angled Nepalese blade puts the mass ahead of the wrist and turns every stroke into an axe blow without an axe's weight. It is the strongest chopper in the machete family and the most tiring to use badly.

For clearing woody brush, splitting kindling and doing camp work with one tool, this is the honest choice. For grass and vine, it is far too much blade.

Billhook and cane — the specialists

A billhook's hooked tip catches a stem and pulls it into the edge instead of pushing it away. Nothing else is as good on hedgerow, bramble and springy green growth.

The cane machete's blunt, hooked end is built for sugar cane and heavy grass, hooking the cut stalk aside as it goes. Outside that work it is awkward.

Length, steel and edge

Eighteen inches suits most people for most work. Twenty-four inches reaches farther and tires you faster. Fourteen inches packs and travels.

Nearly all good machetes are plain carbon steel — 1074, 1075, 1095 — deliberately soft, around fifty on the Rockwell scale, so they bend rather than chip when they meet buried stone. That softness is why a machete needs a file rather than a fine stone: ten passes with a mill file restores a working edge in the field.

A machete edge should be convex and coarse, not razor-fine. A polished edge chips; a filed edge bites.
