Tours — The Weight of Victory
The field is held. The hands that held it tremble.
Historical record
Charles Martel’s army defeated an Umayyad force led by Abd al-Rahman al-Ghafiqi, who died in the battle. Neither reliable army totals nor evidence that Charles personally killed him survive. The traditional date is 732; the precise battlefield and the victory’s long-term significance remain debated.
An imaginative fresco-style reconstruction, not a documentary view or a surviving ancient mural.

Boudica — Before the Silence
An empire may break an army. It cannot command remembrance.
Historical record
Boudica’s uprising destroyed Londinium before her army’s final defeat by Suetonius Paulinus. The final battlefield, traditionally associated with Watling Street, has not been securely identified. Tacitus attributes her subsequent death to poison; Cassius Dio to illness. This painting honours her command rather than inventing a witnessed death. Ancient casualty totals and modern counterfactual outcomes cannot be treated as certain.
