How to Start Blacksmithing at Home

Fire, anvil, hammer, tongs. Everything else is patience.

What actually stops beginners

Not money, and not the anvil. It is heat. A fire that will not reach a bright orange will not move steel no matter how hard you swing, and most first fires are simply too small and too cold. Deepen the fire, get the air under it, and let the steel soak.

The second thing is hammer control. Steel moves perpendicular to the hammer face. Learning that with your hands rather than your reading is the whole first year.

Safety that is not negotiable

Eye protection always. Cotton or wool clothing, never synthetics, which melt into skin. No galvanised steel in the fire — zinc fume causes metal fume fever. Ventilate any indoor forge, and keep water within reach that is not the quench tank.

The method, in order

  1. 01Choose a forge you can actually buildA brake-drum coal forge, a simple propane forge from a lined steel cylinder, or a hole in the ground with a hair-dryer blower. All three reach forging heat. Start with the one whose fuel you can buy locally.
  2. 02Find mass, not an anvilWhat forging needs is mass beneath the work. A length of railway rail stood on end, a sledge head, or a block of mild steel will forge a great deal before a proper London-pattern anvil is worth the money.
  3. 03Buy four toolsA cross-pein hammer of about 1 to 1.5 kg, a pair of wolf-jaw tongs, a wire brush, and a slack tub of water. That is a working shop. Add tools only when a job you are actually doing demands one.
  4. 04Forge mild steel firstHooks, punches, drifts, a fire poker. Mild steel forgives everything and cannot be hardened, so it teaches hammer control without the distraction of heat treatment.
  5. 05Only then move to carbon steelWhen your hammer blows land where you mean them, move to 1075 or 1084 and learn normalising, hardening and tempering as one sequence, never one alone.

How much does it cost to start blacksmithing?
A working home setup can be assembled for very little: a brake-drum or propane forge, a hammer, a pair of tongs and a heavy steel block for an anvil. The expensive route — a new London-pattern anvil and a commercial forge — is optional and can wait years.
Do I need an anvil to start blacksmithing?
