A watermark you can see is a watermark a thief can crop. The Ghost Mark is written into the lowest bit of the colour itself — one part in two hundred and fifty-six, invisible to the eye, and recoverable from any copy of the plate that has not been repainted. When it is found on ground the holder was never permitted, the Keep raises its loudest signal.
