The Commons

Everything else in this house is priced. This is not. Bring steel you already own — bought, inherited, or found in a dead man's attic — and the house will read it, write its upkeep, size you for it, and keep the record. And if you would rather forge your own than buy ours, Forge Wisdom teaches the whole craft: the fire, the steels, the heat treatment, and the recipes. No coin. No purchase, now or ever.

The Upkeep Writ

Upkeep is arithmetic and old craft, not opinion, so no reader is consulted here — nothing you type leaves your own machine. Tell the house what the piece is and where it lives, and it will write the schedule and say what each interval rests on. If you forged it yourself, the making is taught next door in Forge Wisdom. Bound by house law WB-GOV-024.

The writ

Burden 93/100

Kept as you describe — carbon / high-carbon steel, hung open on a wall, in temperate, indoors air — this piece wants oiling about every 42 days and a proper look every 28. Keep to that and it will outlive you. Miss a season and you will not lose it; miss a year and you will.

The duties · 3

  • Every 42 days

Wipe clean of fingerprints, then a thin film of oil on every bare surface.

Why: Reckoned from the metal, the air where you keep it, how it is stored, and how often it is touched — your air is kind to steel, so the interval lengthens.

  • Every 28 days

Look it over in good light: hinges of rust, dark freckles, any bloom at the guard and under fittings.

Why: Rust is cheap to stop on the first day and dear on the thirtieth. The looking costs nothing.

  • Every 182 days

Feed the leather sparingly — a light conditioner worked in by hand, wiped back off.

Why: Leather dries and cracks in dry air and molds in wet. Over-feeding is as bad as neglect.

What the house refused to claim

  • This writ is upkeep only. It is not a valuation, not an authentication, and not a repair instruction — the house does not tell a stranger to take tools to their own piece.

Upkeep only. No valuation, no authentication, no repair instruction. Held to house law WB-GOV-024.

Where the upkeep ends

A writ is worth having a piece to keep. These stand in the hall today, with their steel named plainly.
