The four calls
Spring
- Strip the winter oil and re-coat
- Read every edge for freckling
- Feed leather that dried beside the fire
Summer
- Light oil after every handling
- Air the scabbards; never store a blade sheathed in damp
Autumn
- Full strip, clean and heavy coat before the cold
- Stone and strop whatever you cut with
Winter
- Watch for sweat on cold steel carried into warm rooms
- Wax the fittings
