The axe is older than the sword, older than writing, older than the idea of a soldier. It began as work — the felling of trees, the breaking of bone at the butchering block — and was turned on men only because it was already in the hand and already good at it. That is the axe's whole horror: it never had to be redesigned.

Carbon steel — Carbon Steel. It will take an edge finer than any stainless and hold it through work that would roll a lesser blade. It will also rust if you look at it wrong. Carbon is a bargain: the house gives you the better edge and you give it your attention. Oil it, dry it, and it will outlive you.
