The blade is D2. Carbon and tool steels take a finer edge and take it faster, and they will rust if left wet. Wipe the blade dry and keep a film of oil on it and it will outlast you.
Fittings and furniture: G10 / Micarta. The fittings are where a piece is honest or is not — a guard, a pommel and a grip that are fitted tight will not shift under work.
Ownership and carry are two different questions. Most provinces permit possession of what they forbid on the street, and blade-length ceilings apply to carry rather than to what may be shipped to your door.

A blade that does not fold is a blade that does not fail. The fixed knife is the plainest promise steel can make: full tang, no hinge, nothing between your hand and the edge but the handle you chose. It is the pattern that outlasts its owner and gets handed down without ceremony.

Hardened steel — D2. This is the modern end of the trade: alloys that hold an edge far past the point where old steel gives up, at the cost of being stubborn on the stone. Sharpen it rarely, sharpen it properly.
